When you’re seeking a fun and adventurous activity but are looking to save the dollars, remember that fun and adventure are always within reach. I recently had an incredible day trip to Cape May, NJ with my daughter, her friend, and mother to search for dolphins and whales along the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean. It was some of the most fun I’ve experienced on a day trip. I am based in Virginia so it was just a short 4-hour drive to Cape May. Our plan was simple and affordable. We arrived just in time to grab some lunch before our boat departed for the dolphin and whale watching tour.
Dolphin & Whale Watching
Our main purpose for driving to Cape May was to see the dolphins and more importantly, the whales! My daughter and I have tried twice now to see whales when we were in Maine and both times were cancelled. So, our fingers and toes were crossed that we’d see a whale or whales this time. Third time is a charm, eh?!
I am so happy to announce that we saw several pods of dolphins along our whale watching tour as well as sting ray, jellyfish and fish! Hah, who would’ve thought you’d see these things in the ocean! I’m kidding. But no, really, I was surprised at how clear and blue the ocean water is when you get way out there away from land. We finally saw our whale, a humpback whale towards the very end of our tour. But hey, we saw our whale and it was the coolest experience ever!
The tour was done by Cape May Whale Watcher. Our captain was very experienced and provided a ton of information regarding how both the dolphins and whales live in the ocean to include their communication abilities, what they eat, how often they eat, mating seasons and what times of year you can see more dolphins and whales than not. Overall, it was a great experience and our captain was super informative!
Where to Eat
My crew and I love good seafood. We stopped at The Lobster House for lunch. My daughter and her friend chose live lobster for their main course. Haha…the girls loved it! I think I had more fun watching both of them try to eat their lobster than anything else. I tried their crab cakes. Initially, I thought, “2 crab cakes, that’s it?” Hah, but I was wrong. They were very filling!
The Antique Store
We stopped into this antique store we saw before having to check in for our dolphin and whale watching. Everything in Cape May is within walking distance which I loved. This antique store was 3 minutes from our boat check-in. The girls loved seeing all the things that were considered antique, such as: records, jewelry and purses to name a few. It was nostalgic to see some of the items that reminded me so much of the years I lived with my grandmother as a child…like that typewriter! Haha…
If you’re planning to visit the east coast or you live within driving distance of Cape May, NJ, I highly recommend you take a day trip and explore. There’s beaches in Cape May as well; however, our intent for our day trip was to see whales and that’s exactly what we did!
